Sway, not a form of movement or nightclub in Covent Garden, but a wee town in New Forest, is where we visited the first weekend of January.
It was an opportunity to chill after the busy Christmas and NYE period. New Forest is miles of green, animals grazing and is famous for being one of the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land in England. Our visit was also a trial run for a review coming up of a new country hotel, The Manor at Sway, re-launching in March.
Nearby Brockenhurst is known for The Pig, a well established chain celebrating great British food and a hotel represented by the very flash Mr & Mrs Smith, but Sway is representing with the gusto gastro The Silver Hind.
A cosy pub with dining room, the food punches above what should be its weight. The locals are content sitting at the bar with a pint, or settling in with friends and family to enjoy a no-nonsense menu featuring pub favourite, burger and chips or more creative choices like pigeon or jerk chicken caesar salad. (The menu changes regularly).
Over two days we had the jerk chicken salad, lamb with herb crust, prime aged steak and the wild boar burger. No complaints on taste or presentation, and a round of applause for portion sizes.
Reasonably priced, friendly service and a comfortable atmosphere, it ticks all of the right boxes when venturing out of your comfort zone, i.e. the city.
