Oh, how I do like a local pub. Especially one with a fireplace. To be fair, this pub is not quite local to me, located up north in Winchmore Hill, it is quite a trek from my central Hoxton spot. However, the good news is, it is next to a good friend of mine who lives in the Palmers Green area. Following our recent visit, I am thinking this will be a regular haunt for us from now on.
So, the pub has warm and welcoming feel. I guess the fireplace adds to that and we were lucky to find a spot right next to it. Oh wow, as the bitter cold outside makes everyone feel miserable, we delighted in the warmth from the coal fire. You may be well jel and if so, you should be because that is not all the pub offers. Enter the no nonsense wholesome food many which gastro style pies, pub staple dishes like fish and chips and surprising monkfish in a herb crust. Of course, we wish we could have ordered everything, but it was a lunch visit so we had to curb out enthusiasm.
I was greedy enough to have a starter and went for the king prawns with chorizo. It was yummy. For mains, I went for chicken, no surprise there, but yes it was lush. A tasty half chicken with delicate with meat, chunky fries on the side and a tasty gravy. My dining companion went for the beef pie, slow cooked in red wine with shallots and bacon. Wow!
The food was great. Everything fell into place with the heat, the cool staff and chilled out crowd. The fact that we were next to an 8 year old celebrating his birthday didn’t even dampen our experience. The kids were very well behaved.
If you are local, you must drop by. If like me, you live a distance away, find a friend nearby. It is definitely worth it. Sometimes you just need a chilled out pub to enjoy some good food and company. The fireplace is a fantastic bonus, so glad we randomly picked this place to visit.
Also, do note that they have a really nice beer garden for enjoying the rays in the Summer months.
