The Alford Arms, Frithsden

On an impromptu trip to check out Whipsnade Safari Park, we opted to stay in the area for a little weekend away. I guess it had an element of staycation being no more than an hour outside of London. During our visit, on our tour of pubs on the last day we discovered The Alford Arms. Originally our plan was to visit Frithsden Vineyard for a little something different to do, but unfortunately it was closed with it being a Sunday. So on the corner en route, we discovered what proved to be a popular haunt for the locals. It was lovely. A gastro vibe, with a friendly and welcoming service. As there were no tables inside or out, we sat at the bar. If you should decide to come here, try and get there early to grab a table outside.
Another thing to note about this place is that it is super dog friendly. Since my mate got herself a little bubba dog, she has to be careful where she goes for local food/drink and hols, otherwise poor Alfie will just be stuck indoors all day. This place had 4 dogs inside, that I could see. A huge plus.
Comfortable at the bar, we had a look at the menu and it was a struggle making a decision as all of the dishes sounded amazing. In the end I went for the braised lamb shoulder with the most gorgeous roasted garlic barley, rainbow chard and rosemary jus. Now barley doesn’t jump straight out at me as being an option in place of rice, potatoes etc, but it certainly worked and I can see myself working this little new find into my dishes at home. Jacki had confit duck leg with whole grain mustard mash, braised red cabbage and thyme jus. For me the lamb was served in a great way, almost pulled. The food in general was miles above the grade you would expect in a pub, even a gastro one. Jacki was happy with her food, in particular, the creamy mash.
It is a wee bit of a trek if I should decide randomly that I want some of their food and trust me, I do. So it will have to be on the agenda if I discover another reason to visit the area.
