Not one for the big bold famous design houses like Gucci, Armani and Chanel, I tend to go to the House of Fraser down by Monument for leftfield suggestions. There is an excellent lady working there who has so far suggested some great buys. I like woody, musky and spicy (sounds like week old dirty gym kit). So essentially according to my fabulous perfume lady friend, I should focus on cedar, patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. Doesn’t sound too clever when broken down like that, but I have now purchased perfumes from her (one a men’s) and have yet to be disappointed.
In stores and chemists, I always tend to leg it past ladies and their sprays. No I do not want a spritz of something I will likely despise. I would rather talk to someone in the know who will get me the right smell for me. It can all be very scientific with you taking a sample on your wrist, living with it for a day while the notes absorb and change to create what will be the final aroma. I however, have taken a leap of faith with Coach, Gaultier Le Male (for men) and now more recently, Victor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb, Narciso Rodriguez and new to the market, Zadig & Voltaire. Let’s break it down and see what these bad boys are made of to see if the techy bits fit.
