Got an early morning flight from Stansted, will if that is the case I highly recommend staying at the Novotel. This place has a couple of owners who have not shown it a whole lotta luv, but now the Accor bunch have stepped in and are taking it to the next level. Let’s not get it twisted, this is not a destination hotel. You don’t think, wow I am going to book a weekend away at the Novotel Stansted, but what this does give you, is that bite size comfort before you embark on your holiday adventure. They have all the normal functionality of a bar and restaurant, there is also a gym for working out. The interior design is very generic, but not offensive – simple and practical. The bedrooms are a good size, with what appears to be newly refurbished finishes. The massive TV has a bit advert for the venue and some basic channels to watch. The bathroom is clean and the shower gave a good mix of cold and water. Sometimes hotel showers can be hard to navigate, but this was simple. Towels were suitably soft. I like that there was an ironing board and iron in the wardrobe, as sometimes waiting for housekeeping can take a lot of time. That said, I am not sure about the H&S around having these in the rooms as I recall asking for this in another hotel and being told that it is against H&S.
I was hungry so I made my way down to restaurant to have a bite to eat. Of course as a solo diner, it can be a little uncomfortable as people have a way of eyeing you up if you are alone. Not sure why this is not acceptable or thought to be rare. Anyway, everyone were more concerned with their own dining experience, so no awkward looks here. The menu was decent with a mix of grill and pasta dishes. I went for chicken on cous cous with pesto which was surprisingly good. The service was a little erratic. It felt like they had just finished the refurbishment and they were getting used to the new operation. I hope they have figured out what they are doing for future visits.
This was my second Novotel experience, with my first one being in Monaco (a very big contrast). As a accor card holder, it encourages you to book within their hotel group to earn points. Not sure how much business you need to place with them to actually see the results of such loyalty, but I will keep you in the loop.
One thing to note is that there is no free shuttle service to the hotel from Stansted, you have to pay. I can’t recall how much it was but it was under £5.
