Mr Fogg’s Gin Parlour, Covent Garden – Excellent gin base and much more

It’s always nice when you are out for a warm early eve wander and you discover cool places to drink and eat. Even around Covent Garden which is essentially one of the tourist central locations, there is the odd cool joint where you are amongst locals. Mr Fogg’s is one of these spots. Just off theatre land there are two parts to this wonderful surprise. There is the tavern come drinking salon with an entrance on St Martins Lane. The interior is very old school pub themed around Phileas Fogg (hence the name). Then there is the Gin parlour upstairs which you access from an unassuming door on a pedestrianised side street. You are greeted by a host kitted out in the gear of derby hat, sleeve garters and waistcoat. We headed for the gin palace.

As you head up a narrow staircase you past quirky and eccentric paraphernalia from days past. Chintz prints, mahogany furniture, vibrant gold, chaise longues, stools with tapered legs all add a coziness and warmth to this first floor bar area. It is very authentic and a good theatre piece for someone wanting something different. Now whilst there is an area which has a focus on Gin, the bar offers a distinctively creative cocktail offering with all blends paying a part. From rum to whisky, from vodka to tequila, the large cocktail list experiments with infusions, aromas and seasonings.

I am not a cocktail connoisseur; I know what I like but this place really inspires you to trust the two female bartenders mixing up a storm. It is always a pleasure to see a lady behind the bar anyways, but ones with obvious extended knowledge is a big thumb’s up.

We were enticed to have a Rictusempra with vodka citron, butterfly pea flower infused St Germain elderflower liqueur, grapefruit juice and soda water. I had the Spicy Rupee with vodka, elderflower cordial, honey, lemon and chilli. I can safely say that we were guided to the right choices as we both enjoyed them a great deal. As it was a flying visit, we didn’t get a chance for seconds but this is totally a spot for someone wanting to experience fabulous cocktails with a dash of girl power.
