Mas Q Menos are dotted around London and I have always been intrigued by the set up. It looks like a deli with all the hanging jamon, then there is the tapas bar and also a casual sit down restaurant vibe. Behind the bar, you see the display of various Spanish meats and cheeses ready to be sliced, plated and served.
With a friend visiting in town and a group of us wanting to entertain him, nothing quite fit like a tapas sharing experience. Equipped with my tastecard we headed over to Holborn for our reserved table. The Holborn site is large, open plan and airy. High ceilings, large windows across the frontage and nicely spaced out tables/chairs. We were sat in a corner which was good, as I knew we would probably become a little excitable. When you haven’t see a friend for that long, of course the wine flows, the memories resurface and the jokes burst.
Having ordered some white and red wine from a Spanish wine list reaching from Aragon to Toro, we studied the tapas menu for our choices. We went for every food group, with classics like pimento pardon and potato bravas, to some lush gambas pil pil (king prawns in olive oil with garlic and chilli). Grilled chestnut mushrooms stuffed with Spanish blue cheese and Garbanzo con Chorizo (chorizo, chickpeas, piquillo peppers with pimento). A selection of spanish cheeses and Estofado de Cerdo (a basque stew of slow cooked pork, with potatoes and carrots). It was a good cross section of food which was very tasty. It was just enough for the four of us too. I would be interested to have a jamon platter on a future visit as there is nothing quite like Spanish meat.
Mas Q Menos is a really relaxing place, great for catching up with friends. The service was lovely, our waiter talked about Spain, recommended some dishes and guided us through the wine list. We will definitely be back to visit and with 50% off food with tastecard, it makes the experience even sweeter.
