“A taste of Italy” is what La Nostra prides itself on and in the village of Epping, it certainly does bring a sense of mediterranean coastline cuisine. The high street has its fair share of Italian chains making their home here (Pizza Express and Prezzo), but whilst not quite a taverna, the food speaks to its heritage authenticity.
The menu boasts creamy risottos, classic pasta dishes and hearty pizzas. The meat and fish courses are home to Veal, Sea Bass, Chicken and Steak amongst a few, all cooked in bold sauces, served plentiful in their portions.
For our quick lunch stop, I opted for a light garlic king prawn salad with rocket, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, avocado and a touch of garlic oil and chill. There was an abundance of prawns, char-grilled butterflied the way I like it. The avocado was ripe and cherry tomatoes bursting with flavour. A salad can be very boring, but not here. They appear to take the same care that they do with the robust mains dishes. My dining companion had Pasta Bolognese. Yes its a simple classic dish, but she has sworn by this dish for as long as I can remember. Again, she was not disappointed and the ragu from Bologna was suitably delicious. Simple ingredients, but amazing taste. The pasta was al dente as should be served.
We had the pleasure of sitting al fresh on the high street. Probably not the healthiest spot with passers by and fuel draining 4×4’s coming past every second, but it was a lovely hot day and the background faded to a blur as we enjoyed our lunch.
La Nostra is a must for non-Epping residents as I know that the locals give much love to this place.
