Broadgate Circle. A bit of a city nightmare with a sea of suits. Try to weave your way through the crowd and you happen upon the very cool Franco Manca. I have passed many. Soho, Covent Garden, Broadway Market and just kept walking on casually by. I have heard story about its awesomeness, but I have not been swayed because I am currently in a 4-way with Homeslice, George & Vulture and Pizza Pilgrims. I just didn’t know if I had it in me to introduce another piece of carb into my life.
I thought the bridge and tunnel crowd of snappy suited, well gelled hair, tinder swiping, tanned, dolly bird watching types would make me head straigh back into the Liverpool station towards my bus stop, but eh, one should be experimental.
Franco Manca is busy. If you manage to get a table straightaway, high five, otherwise, you give your name to an animated host. When your table is ready he rings a bell, yes and shouts your name into the square/circus. Great way to manage the flow of peeps to be fair.
Once you are all comfy inside, the pizzas are big enough for you to share. Order some classic toppings and tuck in. Franco Manca is not reinventing the wheel, it is just doing good pizza which is what I always want. But then again, my interpretation may be different than others, so let me explain it as best I can. I like it thing. Not too soft, a bit of crisp. Not too much tomato. Lashing of chilli oil over parma ham, prosciutto, or some other Italian meat. Chilli is a must an sometimes even extra mozzarella or gorgonzola. On a very special day, there is truffle oil (sex on a plate – well pizza). There you go. Tick most of these boxes, then that bitch is mine.
For our pizza extravaganza we went for one with cured organic chorizo and mozzarella. We also went for gloucester old spot ham pizza with mozzarella, buffalo ricotta and wild mushrooms. All the pizzas are made on sourdough, a fave of mine and can be topped up with extra ingredients.
It is actually unfair how good this was as it really has me torn between all my favourites. I guess they all have a place and part to play. Quiz nights belong to George & Vulture, Homeslice is after drinking in Shoreditch, Pizza Pilgrims is my deliveroo friend and Franco Manca is my consolation for every having to be in that circle, which will definitely happen as a mate works nearby. No more good pizza please unless you are outside London, my heart cannot take it.
