The Mondrian recently opened in Upper Ground, near Blackfriars Bridge. Housed in the famed Sea Containers, it is made up of a hotel with a lovely selection of bedrooms and suites, some of which have a terrace view of the river. The terrace being built specifically so it feels like you are on a ship. There are two restaurants and two bars, one of which is a rooftop!
I ventured to Dandelyan, the main bar just past the epic hotel lobby. The space is inviting, with a catwalk of sorts taking you past booths and cosy sofas. The cocktail list is inspired by the exotic, a clash of ingredients which should not really work together, but so do. I had a Monroe, which had “wheat” in it. I also had a taste of an Evil Manhattan, a botanical beer “vermouth”, with bonded rye and bitters – both infusions hit the spot. The rest of list includes ingredients such as patchouli, fermented peychaud, concrete, clay, chalk bitters….yup, the exotic.
Dandelyan is accessible. It doesn’t have an air of arrogance that some cool hotel bars do. The team know their sh@* and the service is effortless. Hopefully this is not a “new opening” energy and it continues. The pricing is as you would expect, from £11 per cocktail. By Sammijo.
