Benares, Madrid

Benares is well known in London. It’s Mayfair venue comes from twice Michelin starred chef Atul Kochhar. As if that isn’t enough BenaresĀ  has its very own Michelin star and is known as being one of the best Indian restaurants in London.
Being on my doorstop, you would wander why I would go all the way to Madrid to check out Michelin star cooking, but I thought it would be interesting to see their interpretation of Indian cooking. Not just because it is a famous brand, but because during my travels in Spain, Indian food has never tasted as authentic as it does here in London.
On our visit, we had booked the tasting menu to get the full rounded experience. Firstly I started with a glass of Indian Chenin Blanc which was crisp and dry. Our 6 course feast was a selection of tasty, well cooked and perfectly presented dishes.

Mini onion bhaji
Seared scallops, whole roasted garlic, soft shell crab on some kind of rice
King prawn, tandoori chicken
Cod on a bed of spinach
Succulent sliced steak
Tarka dahl and pilau rice
Blackberry mousse with sorbet
a trio of mini creme brulee, chocolate brownie and
caramel mousse
I can certainly see where the accolade comes from, as this was a contemporary Indian dining experience to envy all others. The food was absolutely delicious and for so many courses, was delivered and well spaced intervals. There was not one thing I did not like or could not eat, especially as we know that desserts are not normally part of my reportoire.
There was a good level of English for the service, as the entire menu is written in Spanish. However, a quick google of any words you don’t understand can help you out if you want to decide between the tasting menu or a la carte. Either way, I would suggest an empty stomach is what you start with as there is a lot to work through.

A well to do crowd surrounded us, as you would expect for a place that is not cheap. The team give you an A5 copy of the menu to take away, so you do not forget the gorgeous dishes you ate.
It was definitely worth a visit and is now on my ‘to do’ list for that special occasion in London.
